The sunken garden is a hidden garden buried lower then main garden level.
Project name: Sunken garden
Location: Krasnodar, Russia
Garden size: 900 sq.m
Landscape design and construction : Burakov
Year: 2019

The idea of a sunken garden appeared due to a harsh continental climate of Krasnodar city. It has a very hot and dry summer and cold snowless winter. The concept allows us to use other plants, that are used to a more mild climate than Krasnodar city. Due to a downgrade the extreme summer temperature lowers for 3-4 degrees C. The air gets more humid. The winter temperature gets milder. Additionally we add a mist watering system.

The Sunken garden lies between the villa building and a river. The main idea was to hide the garden down, so that only the tops of the trees can be seen from the windows of a house.

There is a waterfall with a a grotto underneath. The water runs around the garden and wastes into the river.

To get down to the garden you can take to ways - stairs or a slope pathway. The garden is surrounded with a 3 meter stone walls.

Due to local climate optimisation the Sunken Garden becomes more comfortable not only for plants, but for humans as well. You can stay in it during the hot days of Krasnodar city summer.
